Looking for companionship after a near-fatal car crash, Elena Mannes, an award-winning television journalist and producer, decided to get her first dog. But what she found with her dog Brio shook the foundations of her physical and spiritual worlds, sending her on a quest to discover the nature of his spiritual origins and to contemplate and seek out the possibility of interspecies communication--even after death.

Soon after bringing her puppy home, Mannes realized that the master-companion relationship would not be possible with Brio, who quickly showed that he had a mind--and a spirit--of his own. A healer Mannes visited immediately focused on Brio, exclaiming that he was an old soul. Mannes’s growing curiosity about the intelligence, emotions, and consciousness of Brio and other dogs led her to contact an animal psychic in California who described, with amazing accuracy, Brio’s favorite walks and the author’s apartment from the dog’s point of view. Motivated by her experience, Mannes produced a filmed segment with Diane Sawyer featuring the same psychic, who described Sawyer’s country house and her dog’s favorite spots in the yard. Mannes’s skeptical journalist background compelled her to investigate further. She delved into the world of animal communicators, psychics, and scientists studying animal intelligence, including Rupert Sheldrake, to find answers to her multiplying questions: Do animals have thoughts and feelings? Consciousness? Souls? Is interspecies communication possible? Can animals reincarnate?

Spanning the entire life and afterlife of Brio, including his last days and his messages to the author after he passed on, this book also explores Mannes’ investigations into the spiritual life of animals, offering a new understanding of the unbreakable bond between humans and animals. Mannes invites readers to move beyond the owner-pet relationship and shows us how to see animals as thinking, feeling, spiritual beings whose connections with us extend far beyond life and death.

ELENA MANNES is an award-winning independent documentary director/writer/producer with honors that include six Emmy Awards, a George Foster Peabody Award, two Directors Guild of America Awards, and nine Cine Golden Eagles. She has written, directed, and produced series and documentaries for CBS, PBS, and ABC. But she considers her greatest honor to be the journey she took with the remarkable being, her “soul dog” Brio. When he came into her life, it changed completely. She was a driven, ambitious, Type A network TV producer, trained to be skeptical and very wary of anything in the realm of the paranormal. Her experience with Brio led her into the world of animal communicators, telepathy, and mediums. Her search for a lasting and meaningful connection with a dog led her into the world of animal communicators and telepathy. She came to believe that it’s possible to communicate with a fellow creature —even after physical death. Mannes invites readers to see animals as thinking, feeling, spiritual beings whose connections with us extend far beyond life and death. Mannes lives in Stonington, CT. with her current dog Bravo – another black standard poodle – and Kismet the cat. Visit Elena Mannes at: www.souldogbook.com

MELISSA LEVY has served as the Executive Director of PAWS, the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, since it became an independent rescue organization in 2009. Prior to that time, she was Director of Development of its then-parent organization, the Philadelphia Animal Care and Control Association. Melissa has had primary responsibility for developing PAWS’ lifesaving efforts since 2006 and has presided over the growth of the organization from a grassroots, volunteer-based endeavor focusing mainly on adoption and foster care promotion to its current status as Philadelphia’s largest rescue partner and provider of low-cost veterinary care for disadvantaged pet owners. PAWS saves and serves more than 40,000 animals annually, and is leading Philadelphia to become a No-Kill City. Under Melissa's leadership, PAWS co-founded the Philadelphia No-Kill Coalition, which now has 22 member organizations working collaboratively toward a common goal. PAWS has a staff of 65 employees and thousands of dedicated volunteers, who work in its three no-kill facilities to rescue and care for homeless animals, and to provide spay/neuter and basic vet care to the public and fellow rescue organizations. Melissa received a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University and previously worked in the for-profit and non-profit sectors, focusing mainly on business development, communications, marketing, and community outreach. She resides in South Philadelphia with her husband and their dog, Rosie, a former stray who inspired Melissa to begin her work in animal welfare when she was adopted in 2005. Now 14, Rosie is a living reminder of how much progress PAWS has helped propel in her lifetime, and how much love, joy, and companionship is at stake as we continue working toward a time when no savable animals lose their lives in Philadelphia shelters.
