About Innocents Abroad
Joseph W. McGrath and Lisa McGrath’s dream was to live for a year in Europe—a dream that could be every baby boomer’s dream. In pursuing this odyssey through Italy, France, Spain and the Netherlands, they found that they had accidentally traced the history of Western art from city to city, artist to artist, genre to genre. The couple traveled from ancient Rome to the Middle Ages and on the Gothic churches, the Renaissance, the Baroque, Neoclassicism, Impressionism, Cubism and Surrealism. They followed great writers through their cafés and restaurants.
In his book, McGrath guides us on their journey as they immersed themselves in local culture and developed simple earthy friendships with a host of Europeans. McGrath invites his readers to share the couple’s adventures in cuisine, cannabis and the workings of Airbnb. Joe and Lisa celebrated New Year’s Eve with wine and song at Rome’s “Communist Bar,” savored Michelin three-star cuisine in Paris and sampled tapas bars in Barcelona. Joe and Lisa rediscover their own relationship after years separated by the obligations of work.
“Innocents Abroad is a clearly written and insightful description of a journey we would all like to take. Visualized through an artist’s eye, Innocents Abroad is a very good travel journal.”
—Al Gury, MFA Chairman of the Painting Department at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA)
“An inspiring account of an inspiring year. Everyone should have this opportunity, and reading this book will probably inspire you to your own adventure.”
—Joseph Farrell, PhD, Professor Classical Studies, University of Pennsylvania
“As a child growing up in Europe/France, the book brings back wonderful memories of the small stores, patisseries and local markets. Diving into this book will fly you first-class to experience the life abroad without leaving home.”
—Pierre Camels, Bibou Restaurant and Head Chef
